Issue

Our client, the world’s leading producer of precious metal catalysts and catalyzed components, identified it had a number of supervisors who needed training in performance coaching skills. They would then be equipped to coach multi-skilled operators whom they either worked with or managed.

Our approach

Research into the project identified the need for three one-day workshops with eight delegates in each. The workshop was designed to meet the specific needs of the target audience by developing, in conjunction with the client, realistic coaching scenariosthat were immediately familiar, practical and relevant.

A ‘skill shift self-assessment’ form was developed to assess delegates’ knowledge, skill and attributes before and after the Performance Coaching Skills workshop. This demonstrated to the participants that their skills had improved with practice in the workshop and also enabled a more measured evaluation of the programme afterwards.

The outcome

The practical workshop outlined the coaching and development process by defining what coaching is and how it can be used for developmental purposes when managing or working with people, to support and reinforce their learning.

Participants gained insight from discovering their own coaching style and its impact on those they coach. They enjoyed putting the new skills into practice in role plays; getting coachees involved in discussions, building rapport, recognising when to use open and closed questions, how to adapt their style to suit the needs of the trainee, and avoiding giving all the answers! Skilled and incisive feedback from the trainer and from peers helped to refine these key performance coaching skills.
