Maximising Value in the Trainee Relationship

Benefits

  • Improved trainee retention
  • Significant enhancement in the quality of the experience provided within the training contract
Issue

In a large, international law firm a series of focus groups clearly identified that, while many aspects of the trainee’s experience were perceived in a positive way there were some were the perception was negative. Those negative aspects were having an impact on morale and on the decision trainees were taking at the end of their contract.

Our approach

The firm recognised the importance of this issue and worked with JSB on a two-pronged approach. The first was to design and deliver an intensive one-day workshop for trainees which offered them practical help in how to manage their workload, to handle the pressure of a highly-demanding and fast-moving environment and to interact successfully with more senior lawyers in the firm. The second was to run a two-hour evening session for groups of partners and senior associates designed to support them in further enhancing the quality of the trainee’s experience in the firm.

The outcome

Higher morale amongst trainees. Enhanced relationship between trainees and more senior lawyers. Better understanding of what trainees and senior lawyers need, want and expect of each other. Enhanced decision making at the end of the trainee contract.
