Overview

Workplace conflict is costly, time consuming and stressful for all concerned. If it escalates to formal proceedings it can be incredibly damaging. The skills to mediate effectively are not used every day by the majority of managers and HR practitioners, and conflict situations can be daunting for those asked to mediate if they have little experience of the process.

This high-impact, experiential mediation course is designed to ensure participants return to work with the capability and confidence to run mediations:

  •   Day one provides a full understanding of what mediation is, how it can work and the tools available
  •   Participants then embed their learning on days two and three through structured, hands-on practice based around a simulated mediation that is brought to life with the help of professional actors

The result? Mediation capability. This approach brings a dimension of realism that enables participants to build the skills, comprehensive understanding and confidence to tackle workplace conflict through mediation.

Participants rapidly develop their mediation skills in a supportive, collaborative environment. Their learning is punctuated by structured, detailed feedback from both the course leader, Dr Diane Hodgson, and peers. Working with the course leader, detailed action plans are put in place by each participant to ensure they return to work with practical steps to implement their learning.

In addition, as an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) endorsed course, participants are assessed via continuous observation and will receive confirmation that they have successfully progressed through the course and built their mediation skills.

End of day one

The second and third days of the workshop will allow participants to put into practice the mediation skills and techniques that have been explored during day one.

Working with actors, participants will take part in role plays focusing on common scenarios where mediation skills are most valuable thus, ‘bringing to life’ the techniques learnt in the classroom. This will present a unique opportunity to develop the confidence to apply your newly acquired skills to real-world workplace situations.

Throughout days two and three participants will take part in carefully structured mediation scenarios, punctuated by feedback from the tutor, plus peer and self assessment.

The five key stages of these role plays are:

State 1: Individual meetings
During the role play scenarios participants will play the role of mediator, the parties will be represented by professional actors. During stage one the mediator will meet with each of the parties individually.

Stage 2: Meditation preparation
Participants prepare for the main mediation meeting

Stage 3: The mediation
Participants will take part in a role-play scenario where they meet both parties to facilitate the process.

Stage 4: De-brief
After each role play scenario participants will receive feedback on the skills that have been demonstrated. This feedback will come from the tutor and fellow participants.

Stage 5: Evaluation and action planning
Through reviewing the feedback from the tutor, fellow attendees and their own self assessment, participants will reflect on what they have learnt. This will be an opportunity for each participant to evaluate their own strengths and identify areas for further development.

Lunch and coffee will be available at appropriate times during the day.
