Issue
Our client required negotiation skills training for a team which was often part of a large - and complex - company negotiations. Consequently they had differing degrees of control over what could and could not be negotiated. Participants needed to develop their preparation skills so that they could structure their arguments in advance and think about how best to engage the other parties via various psychological tools and tips. In particular participants needed coaching around achieving the right outcome from scenarios where a resolution seemed unattainable.
Our approach
We designed a practical and fast-paced programme which was designed to provide participants with practical tips to take away and implement immediately. These included how to avoid problems escalating by asking powerful questions and how to end well. Via a mix of tutor input, discussion sessions, group work and practical exercises we helped participants learn how to move forward in negotiations; when and how to compromise and when to clarify when sacrifices have been made. Our scenarios and exercises reflected typical negotiations as well as participants’ specific needs and concerns.
The outcome
Participants got to grips with the fundamentals of effective negotiation and learned how to use the best approach for each negotiation. They improved their skills of projecting confidence – through voice, body language and choice of words. Most importantly they practised using real life scenarios so that they could improve their ability to influence relationships, handle confrontation and most importantly close deals and agreements.
