Issue
Our client, an independent inspection body driving standards for the NHS and independent healthcare organisations, was expanding rapidly. This created a need to devolve responsibility for recruitment to line managers, with ongoing informed support from HR professionals seeking to develop their role as internal consultants. This training needed to support the recent introduction of a new core competency framework. Two separate workshops were required: the first to train the line managers in the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to interview successfully; the second to inform HR of the content of the training being given to the line managers to enable them to be effective in their consultative role.
Our approach
We familiarised ourselves with the detail of the new competency framework and other related processes and procedures. We designed a half-day workshop for HR and a one day workshop for managers, meeting the client’s request for them to be fast-paced, highly interactive, with maximum benefit from practical work.
Our evaluation and report back process, using questionnaires and interviews, ensured the highest quality standards at all stages of the learning process. The roll-out of training involved bi-monthly delivery and ongoing just-in-time delivery at different UK locations.
The outcome
Participants reviewed alternative recruitment selection methods, considered legal aspects of employment, worked with question technique and design appropriate to job descriptions and person specifications. Through role plays they practised keeping control of interview structure, having evidence of note-taking, how to evaluate evidence of competence, score and make a selection. Effective feedback from the trainer helped each participant identify parts of the process where they might need support from HR, and areas of skill requiring honing.
