Issue

Our client, a pioneer in biotechnology, who discovers, develops and delivers innovative human therapeutics to serve the medical needs of patients, identified a need for employment law training for three targeted groups: basic employment law for US based American staff who manage staff in the UK; training for the European Research and Development Team focusing on discrimination, grievances and discipline; updated employment law for managers. Operating in a global market within numerous geographic regions, our client is scrupulous in the implementation of its diversity and equal opportunities policies.

Our approach

Through discussion, we familiarised ourselves with the key issues facing each group. We identified individuals’ issues through the use of pre-training questionnaires. Each programme has a different focus and precise objectives vary accordingly. The training is designed to be instructive and interactive, using a lively interactive approach maximising opportunities for questions and discussions. Using case studies to consider legal consequences, participants learn the practical handling of employment law issues and the avoidance of litigation, in line with the company’s staff policies and procedures.

The outcome

Programme 1: 12 American managers participated in a two hour web call training session. They covered recruitment law and practice in the UK, the do’s and don’ts of selection interviews, contractual terms, issues of employment status, rules on part-timers and fixed-term workers, legal developments in flexible working and dealt with individual issues and questions.

Programme 2: 8 managers in the Research and Development Team experienced a three hour, face-to-face session covering discrimination and diversity and handling grievance and disciplinary matters.

Programme 3: A full day of training for managers in employment law, taking into account recent and prospective legislative developments and recent key cases. Training addresses contracts of employment and recruitment, dealing with discrimination, and grievance, discipline and problem issues.

All programmes helped managers emerge equipped to avoid common pitfalls and able to apply best practice techniques.
