Issue
Our client required a one-day programme on Trade Union Handling for line managers – for approximately 65 managers in total.
Objectives of our tailored programme:
- To provide the participants with guidance on the necessary preparation required for negotiating with trade unions
- To help the participants be proactive in managing the negotiation process to their best advantage and that of the company
- To enable the participants to reflect on their experiences to date, identify their own negotiating strengths and weaknesses and help them develop a more flexible style of negotiation
- To develop more constructive and productive relationships with trades union representatives
Our approach
The training was delivered in workshop style over two days. It consisted of instruction from the trainer as well as paired and group role play, real-play exercises and rehearsals.These exercises explored body language, group dynamics, meeting structure and the art of negotiation. JSB’s trainer conducted the programme in a lively, interactive format, maximising opportunity for questions, discussion and skills development. Pre-training questionnaires allowed us to tailor the training to suit individual needs.
The outcome
The participants gained formal practical training that could be applied realistically in the workplace.They built confidence and knowledge of negotiation skills and the negotiating process. Participants learned how to handle difficult situations encountered during negotiations. Pay negotiation was covered and the group welcomed the chance to explore the techniques involved in effective pay negotiations. Most importantly participants went away with the tools to use in best practice negotiation and learned new strategies to develop their confidence within a negotiating environment.
