Employee wellbeing hits the top of the HR agenda
22nd April 2008
Employee wellbeing is swiftly climbing up the agenda for HR and occupational health professionals. Managing ill-health within the workplace can be a difficult and timely process and ensuring you fully understand your legal position in this sensitive area can be difficult. New independent research commissioned by Shaw Trust shows that nearly three in ten employees will suffer from a mental health problem in any one year and that most companies don't have effective policies to identify and deal with ill-health effectively within the workplace – responding to these findings will prove challenging for organisations and HR need to be at the forefront of any action.
Understanding the employment law in this area can really help HR professionals to manage this pressing issue and ensure their organisation follows best practice policies and procedures. Knowing what legal duties your employer owes to staff and getting to grips with absence policies, sick pay and disciplinary procedures can really make a difference to the bottom line and help improve employee morale, wellbeing and retention.
