Favouritism in the workplace: have you been affected?
News item added 8th July 2008

Recent research by Peninsula indicates that favouritism is rife in the workplace. Peninsula conducted a survey which showed that 74% of female employees suffered some type of discrimination at work. They also identified that 86% of female employees thought favouritism towards male colleagues was commonplace and 46% use their gender to benefit them in the workplace.

Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula comments: "Some of the record tribunal payouts are to sexual discrimination cases. I'm amazed that in today's society discrimination against any minority, religion or belief still occurs. Company bosses are the first form of prevention when it comes to preventing sexual discrimination. All workers should be treated equally, whether at the job interview or on the job."

Preferential behaviour that disadvantages any individual, or individuals, must be eradicated. Diversity awareness and the ability to identify discriminatory behaviours are essential to prevent discrimination in the workplace. Well-implemented grievance and discipline procedures and processes also facilitate a no-tolerance approach to discrimination. JSB provides two key training courses to skill up your HR and line management teams on discrimination law and how to handle grievances, discipline and dismissal confidently and effectively:
