Understanding where power and authority come from

  • Power and authority that is positional (from our place in a hierarchy) and personal (from ourselves, from who we are and from how we conduct ourselves)
  • Exploring the difference between these two types of power
  • Understanding different sources of authority – and using them in an appropriate way
  • Doing all this with an awareness of the impact of national, local and organisational culture

Building the foundations of your power, authority and impact

  • Diagnostic exercise. identifying the qualities, skills and behaviours that are needed to maximise your personal power and the impact you make
  • Working ‘from the inside out’ – on who we are. Working ‘from the outside in’ – on how we are
  • Building the foundations. Self-insight, self-confidence, self-belief, self-mastery. Knowing who you are and what you want to achieve. Values, ethics and integrity
  • Being equipped and ready. Knowing the skills you need to possess – interpersonal, diplomatic, tactical – and in verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Taking control of how we are – the way we behave, of the evidence we present to others and of the impression we create. Using language with care. Power, influence and authority
